where the los angeles lakers used to play a little basketball back in the day before they moved. and you know, it gave an opportunity for thousands of people in the englewood area to come out and see the space shuttle. they had a marching band here. they've had music playing. "endeavour" has been sitting there for the better part of an hour. a lot longer than we had anticipated, fredericka. and i am joined by stephanie stillson who works for nasa and has been in charge of preparing all three of the space shuttle orbiters for their retirement. and stephanie, just a great reception from the people in los angeles. right? >> absolutely. from the minute we got here, prior to offloading, before the "endeavour" even got here, great support from the folks at los angeles international airport and the surrounding communities. it's been very welcoming. >> reporter: from your perspecti perspective, the shuttle retiring like this, there had been concerns because of the close quarters. there's areas where there's not much clearance. >> very true. in fact in some cases it's about an inch from wing tip

this stretch of the route from los angeles international airport to the california science center. now, what we can show you is, okay, we have the wing that's really close to that tree. if we look over on the other side of the street, you can now see the platform starting to move. but you can see it's almost out of room on the other side of the street. so it's a very, very delicate maneuver. this platform that it's on, each of the wheels can move individually. it can go side to side and backwards and forwards so they're trying to reposition it right now to get around that tree and try to save it. we have asked a couple of the workers here who are managing this whole process whether they're going to cut the tree down or not. they say they don't know. they have tried throughout the process to save as many trees as possible. 400 have been cut down along the route. they'll be replaced 2 for 1, but some of the residents of the communities have been upset because they don't want to lose any trees. we're still watching the process and we're going to see whether it gets by the tree. you can watch as th

has joined the notorious los angeles commute. the space shuttle "endeavour." it's being wheeled through the city, through the streets there to its final home, the california science center. the earthbound trek started yesterday. it's expected to take until about midnight. after all, it's only going about two miles per hour. cnn john zarrella is following its last big mission. >> the folks at the california science center where the space shuttle "endeavour" will make its final home don't want to call this a once in a lifetime experience. they like to call it a once experience. they don't think anything like this will ever happen again and they're probably right. early this morning the space shuttle "endeavour" making its final trip. they call it mission 26. flew 25 times in space and this will be its 26th mission and it left los angeles international airport and it's gone about a mile and a half so far and pulled in here to a parking lot because they wanted to move it out of the airport before rush hour started and then after rush hour ends and later in the day, they will continu

's start right there in los angeles with the shuttle endeavor. it has been on the move for most of the morning, but it still has a long way to go. a long way if you happen to be trying to move an 85-on the space shuttle. john zarrella is live with us watching it all go by. john, good morning. tell us just how slow is this thing actually going? >> reporter: well, i think it's funny because in orbit, it goes 17,500 miles an hour, and on the streets of los angeles, its top speed has been about 2 miles an hour. so this is certainly the slowest the shuttle has probably ever gone and it's one of shortest trips it's ever made, a total of 12 miles from l.a.x. where it left yesterday to the california science center, which will be its new and final home. they are about halfway home now. we can see from some of the live pictures we have out there now. they're about four blocks from where we are just off of manchester, and this is one of the areas where they expect that about 5,000 people will be gathering here as the shuttle goes by. this is the old forum arena here where the los angeles

but way off schedule. the 85-ton shuttle has been moving through the streets of los angeles since friday night and was supposed to be in place last night. it's only going 12 blocks but they hit a few roadblocks a loij the way. 000s have lined up to get a glims of this once in a lifetime-lifetim lifetime-event. they should make it, though, later this morning to the final destination. and while the space shuttle inches its way on the streets of l.a., one man is headed to temg of space on a balloon. seriously, in a matter of hours skydiver felix baumgartner will make his second attempt from 120,000 feet or 23 miles into the air. he'll go so fast he could become the first man to break the sound barrier without the help of a vehicle. now, as you can imagine, the extreme stunt is dangerous and he knows it. >> well, diving has always been a part of my life. therefore it is important that you do your home work because you need confidence. you have to have confidence with your team and your skills and yourself and you always hope that you're not going to die. it might happen, but i'm going put ev

for the people of los angeles and they're coming out with their kids and their families and getting to take pictures with the orbiter and what happened was they had to move from the airport before they got into l.a. rush hour traffic. they didn't want to be dealing with that so they moved it early this morning and it's only gone a mile and a half, two miles from this location here and it's going sit here for nine hours before they actually move it again. they're doing a little bit of reconfiguring of the transporter system which is incredibly unique in and of itself and it's remote controlled and a guy literally walks in front of it moving these hundreds and hundreds of wheels under it so they can move it and turn it around different streets and they'll reconfigure it today and they'll be taking down power lines before they head out and move again, but the whole journey is going to be 12 miles over a course of 46 hours so not until tomorrow night will they get to the california science center. the shuttle's wingspan is 75 feet wide and they've had to literally cut down 400 trees in order to
